Oh my goodness! Once again, if you can type you can transcribe ... with very little training. This article is focusing on the American transcription companies, which seem to require very few skills tests, as can be seen in their reviews, so is a little one-sided and misinformed.

Transcription isn't just typing. You need good grammar and English, listening skills, good punctuation and you need to know how to construct a sentence so it makes sense. Then you need to know if you are producing a verbatim transcript or a 'clean' transcript and the difference between the various types of transcript. Each British company generally has its own 'house style' and rules you will need to learn, especially so for the court transcription companies (the one I do some work for declines nine out of ten applicants). There can be a lot of research even for 'simple' transcripts to ensure correct name/place/product spellings etc.

If you can crack this, and produce consistently high quality documents (which will be checked for quality), transcribing is a very rewarding job both financially and job satisfaction and you will learn a lot!
