Your best bet for claiming motor expenses is to log all the journeys you do and use the HMRC approved flat rate of 45p per mile (up to the first 10,000 miles) for all your business-related miles. This covers fuel, servicing, MOT, repair and depreciation costs. The alternative approach is to work out what %age you use your vehicle for business and charge that percentage of all your motor costs. You would need to keep all receipts for fuel, servicing, MOT and repairs. It’s much easier to use the flat rate! Just bear in mind that if you’re doing more than 10,000 business miles per annum, it reduces to 25p per mile.
